TASC LEARNING- ROCKS

Following on from staff training in using the TASC (Thinking actively in a social context) the class have used this approach to their science project on rocks.

The children were challenged to find the best rock (with suitable characteristics) to build the walls, roof and foundations for a new house for Mrs Scarisbrick.
Working in groups the children set about researching their task.
The children are taught how to test the permeability of rocks.

Weighing rocks to find out how much water they absorbed.

Researching using Geology websites.

Teamwork

Comparing marble,limestone,sandstone,slate,clay,granite and chalk.

What happened to our clay?

Researching in the Geology zone.

Many children brought in their rock collections into school.

The children prepared presentations to the rest of the class. They were awarded points for including certain elements e.g. Using a bar chart with an explanation.

The winning team. Well done!

It was great to see the children so engaged with their learning. Children were inspired to complete their own research at home. They were able to take ownership of their own learning. A very positive learning experience. The children completed self evaluations ,using the success criteria, on how well they worked scientifically which emphasised the progress they made.
